Reel inclusion: disability in film and tv
Disability representation in the media is important and necessary for a more inclusive society – but is it being done right? How can we make it better?
The media is a powerful tool for visibility, for changing perceptions, and for representing people with disability in an authentic way. But sometimes — more often than we’d like — it reaffirms narratives and falls into the trap of ‘inspiration porn.’
With less than 10% of people on screen with a disability (and only 5.3% behind the camera), people with disability deserve to be represented in a way that’s real and shows who we really are – which is ourselves!
Join us on November 26th at 7pm for our next Open Dialogue where we’ll set the stage for another lively discussion about what we like to see when we see ourselves on screen, and what just doesn’t make the cut.
We’ll also have a brief report back from our Disability Discovery project on foundational supports – so be sure to register today!
